Minecraft 1.21 arrived in June 2024 with trial chambers, the breeze and the mace, and the line then ran through eleven more updates up to 1.21.11, the last version before Mojang switched to year-based numbers. That long run is why so many servers settled somewhere inside it: plugins, maps and modpacks had time to catch up.
The versions inside the line are not all compatible with each other. Most updates after 1.21.1 changed the network protocol, so a server on 1.21.4 does not accept a 1.21.11 client unless it runs ViaVersion, and an older client on a newer server needs ViaBackwards. Open a server page to see the version it reported to our last ping and the versions its owner lists, then set your launcher to match. The versions report shows which versions servers run across the whole list.
Right now 1,775 players are on the 29 Minecraft 1.21 servers that answer our pings, out of 52 listed. Over the last four weeks, the busiest hour was around 15:00 UTC. Measured at 23:09 UTC.

Questions
Questions about Minecraft 1.21 servers
Can I join a 1.21.4 server with a 1.21.11 client?
Only if the server runs ViaVersion, which lets newer clients join older servers. Without it, switch your launcher to 1.21.4. Its server page tells you which exact version it reported to our last ping.
Why do so many servers still run 1.21?
Updating a server means waiting for the server software and every plugin to support the new release, and sometimes converting the world. Many owners stay on a 1.21 version that works and let newer clients in with ViaVersion instead.
How do I play an older 1.21 version?
In the Minecraft Launcher, open Installations, choose New installation, pick the version from the list and create it. Select that installation next to the Play button before you launch the game.
