FTB servers run modpacks from Feed The Beast, from tech heavy packs full of machines to quest driven adventures. You need the same pack and version as the server, installed through the FTB app or another launcher that supports it. FTB packs often come with quest books that guide you through hundreds of hours of progression, which makes a shared server a natural fit.
Check the pack name and version, how much RAM it needs on your computer and whether the server has a whitelist.
