mcMMO is a server plugin that adds RPG-style skills to survival Minecraft: mining, chopping, fighting, farming and fishing earn experience in a matching skill, and higher levels bring passive bonuses and active super abilities such as Tree Feller, which fells a whole tree at once. It runs on the server, so you install nothing, and the server's settings decide how fast you level and how far each skill goes.

To find a server that runs it, the mcMMO server list shows 8 mcMMO servers playable at the latest ping, with 510 players.

What mcMMO adds

Every action that matches a skill earns XP in it. A bar at the top of the screen shows the skill and your progress, and each level up improves that skill's sub-skills: higher chances of double drops, more damage, longer abilities. At set levels new sub-skills become available, and most gathering and melee skills also get a super ability.

mcMMO dates from the Bukkit days. Its original author, nossr50, returned to lead it, and the 2.x overhaul that servers run today began at the end of 2018. It runs on Spigot, Paper and Folia, and 2.3.002, the latest release, supports Minecraft 26.3. Official builds are sold on SpigotMC and Polymart, and the source is public on GitHub, which is where the numbers in this guide come from.

Servers run it on one of two scales. Retro mode, the default, counts levels from 0 to 1,000 and beyond. Standard mode counts 0 to 100. The config describes the switch as "purely cosmetic": every level requirement is multiplied by 10 in Retro mode, so level 500 in Retro is level 50 in Standard. This guide uses Retro numbers and gives Standard in brackets where it matters.

The skills

mcMMO 2.3.002 has 19 skills, and seven of them have a super ability, covered in the next section. Salvage and Smelting are child skills: XP you earn smelting or salvaging is split between their two parents, and the child sits at the average of the parents' levels.

The combat skills also have a Limit Break sub-skill that adds damage against tough, armored opponents. On default settings it only works against players, not mobs.

Super abilities and cooldowns

To use a super ability, right-click with the tool in your hand, and a message above your hotbar says "You ready your Axe." Then use it within a few seconds: chop a log for Tree Feller, or hit a mob for Skull Splitter. If you right-click a lot while building, /mcability turns readying off and on.

AbilitySkillReady withWhat it does
Tree FellerWoodcuttingAxe, then chop a logFells the whole tree, up to 1,000 blocks by default
Skull SplitterAxesAxe, then hit a targetDamage to everything around the target
Super BreakerMiningPickaxe, then mineFaster mining, triple drop chance
Giga Drill BreakerExcavationShovel, then digFaster digging, triple drops and triple XP

Serrated StrikesSwordsSword, then hitArea damage with a chance to cause Rupture
BerserkUnarmedEmpty hand, then punch+50% damage, breaks weak blocks by hand
Blast MiningMiningSneak with a pickaxe or flint and steel, look at TNT from a distance, right-clickRemote detonation, bigger blasts and more ore at higher ranks

On default settings:

  • When you get them. The first seven arrive at level 50 (Standard 5). Blast Mining arrives at level 100 (Standard 10).
  • How long they last. 2 seconds, plus 1 second for every 50 levels (Standard 5), up to 22 seconds at level 1,000.
  • Cooldown. 240 seconds for every ability except Blast Mining, which has 60. /mccooldown shows what is left.
  • Tools wear faster. Abilities cost extra durability, so a Tree Feller run on a giant tree can break a cheap axe.

Power level and leaderboards

Your power level is the total of your levels in every skill except the two child skills. It is the number on /mctop, the main leaderboard, and many servers reward it with ranks or titles. /mctop mining shows one skill's board, /mcrank shows where you stand, and /inspect <player> shows someone else's levels. Skills a server has disabled do not count, so compare power levels only on the same server.

Leveling each skill efficiently

Each level costs 1,020 XP plus 20 for every level you already have, on the default linear curve. At level 100 one level costs 3,020 XP. The values below are mcMMO's defaults from experience.yml. Servers raise or lower them, but the ratios usually survive.

Mining. Stone gives 15 XP and deepslate 30, so a deepslate strip mine levels twice as fast as one in stone. At level 100 a level is about 200 stone, 100 deepslate, or a single deepslate diamond ore (3,600). Ores are where the XP is: coal 400, iron 900 (deepslate 1,300), diamond 2,400 and ancient debris 7,777. Super Breaker speeds it all up.

Woodcutting. Overworld logs give 70 (oak) to 130 (pale oak), with cherry at 105 and jungle at 100, while Nether stems give only 35. Tree Feller is for wood, not XP: on default settings each further log in one felling gives 5 XP less than the one before, down to 1. A 30-log dark oak chopped by hand gives about 2,700 XP, and felled in one go under 900.

Excavation. Dirt, sand, gravel and clay give 40, and mud 80. Giga Drill Breaker triples the XP, so save it for a big flat field of dirt or sand.

Herbalism. Only fully grown crops count: wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots and nether wart give 50 each, sugar cane and cactus 30 per block, melons and pumpkins 20. Green Thumb replants for you. AFK leveling is blocked by default, and bone-mealed tall plants give limited XP.

Fishing. Cod gives 100, salmon 600, pufferfish 2,400 and tropical fish 10,000. After 9 catches in the same spot mcMMO warns you, and from the 10th it counts as over-fishing, so move a few blocks every so often.

Combat skills. XP is the damage you deal, times a multiplier for the mob, times 10. Creepers and wither skeletons are worth 4, skeletons and blazes 3, zombies and spiders 2, animals 1. Mobs from spawners, spawn eggs and nether portals give nothing by default, and one hit counts for at most 100 damage. On 1.9 combat, spam-clicking also lowers your bonus damage and your chance to trigger skills, so swing on a full cooldown. Our comparison of 1.8 PvP and modern combat explains the cooldown.

The rest. Acrobatics gives 600 for a roll or a fall and 800 for a dodge, doubled with Feather Falling boots, though repeated rolls in a short time earn less. Archery pays more for longer shots. Taming gives 250 for a wolf, 1,000 for a horse and 1,500 for a sniffer, and your wolves' attacks earn Taming XP too. Alchemy pays more the more ingredients a potion has, from 666 for a base potion to 2,250 with two amplifiers.

Player-placed blocks give no XP. mcMMO remembers which logs, ores and stone you placed yourself, so you cannot place and re-mine the same ore, while crops still count once they have grown. Stone and cobblestone made by lava and water give nothing by default either, which is why generators do not work.

Server settings that change everything

The switches that make one mcMMO server feel nothing like another, and how to spot them:

  • Retro or Standard. Run /woodcutting. If Tree Feller arrives at 50, the server uses Retro, if at 5, Standard.
  • XP rate. Servers multiply XP globally or per skill, and hold XP events. On mcMMO 2.3.000 and newer, /xprate on its own shows any XP rate event running.
  • Level caps. There is no max level by default, for skills or power level. Most sub-skill bonuses stop growing at 1,000 (Standard 100), so most players treat that as the finish line. Only the triple drop chances of Mother Lode, Clean Cuts and Verdant Bounty keep rising to 10,000 (Standard 1,000). Some servers cap skills lower, and the skill commands show it.
  • Slower curves. Two options are off by default: a cumulative curve, which makes every skill harder to level as your power level rises, and diminished returns, which shrinks XP after you earn a lot in one skill within 10 minutes.
  • Party XP sharing. Parties have their own level, and XP sharing becomes available at party level 10. In equal mode, XP is split between party members within 75 blocks, with a group bonus capped at 1.5 times on default settings, so a pair each get three quarters of what one player alone would earn.
  • Hardcore options. Off by default. They can cost you skill levels when you die, or hand some to your killer.
  • Disabled skills. A server can remove skills through permissions. If /mcstats does not list one, you cannot level it there.
  • Paid XP boosts. mcMMO has permission perks from a 10% boost up to quadruple XP, and some stores sell them. Mojang's Usage Guidelines allow gameplay perks only "provided they don't ruin other players' experience or give a competitive advantage in the game" (read on 18 October 2026), and on a PvP server, levels mean damage.

As of 18 October 2026, this is how it looked:

  • mcMMO lives on survival servers. 10 listings carry the mcMMO tag. Nine of them also list SMP and survival, seven economy, seven crossplay and six RPG.
  • One network holds most of the players. Nine listings were playable at some point in the 7 days to 17 October, together averaging about 650 players. The busiest, a network that carries 15 tags on its listing, accounted for about 570 of them, 88%. The next two averaged about 30 each, and the rest 12 or fewer. Live: 9 playable in the last 7 days, 663 players on average, 89% on the busiest.
  • Busiest in the European afternoon. Over the 28 days to 17 October, mcMMO servers peaked at 15:00 UTC with about 910 players and were quietest at 03:00 UTC with about 400. Weekends were about 13% busier than weekdays. In your time zone, the peak is at , the quietest hour , and weekends 14% busier.
  • Bedrock works. At 01:03 UTC on 18 October, 5 of the 8 playable mcMMO servers also answered on their Bedrock port. Because mcMMO runs on the server, Bedrock players on a Geyser server level skills too. Live: 5 of 8.

A network that runs mcMMO in one world counts here with all its players, because our pinger sees one count per address. For skill-based servers with quests and classes, see the RPG server list, for classic progression the survival server list, and for every other mode in a few sentences, Minecraft server types A to Z. The methodology page explains how we measure.

FAQ

Which mcMMO skill should you level first?

Level what you already do. Mining and Woodcutting come with every survival start, and Tree Feller at level 50 saves hours of chopping. Acrobatics levels itself as you fall, and Repair is worth raising early because it makes your diamond gear last. On a PvP server, put your time into the combat skill of the weapon you use most.
